“Leyendo y escribiendo para desahogarme: Latinx Children’s Literature for Liberation” with Dr. Carla España

Dr. España will discuss ways to examine language ideologies by applying a critical lens to Latinx children’s literature and personal bilingual and multilingual journeys. She will show examples of bilingual curricula that apply a Critical Bilingual Literacy approach from En Comunidad: Lessons for Centering the Voices and Experiences of Bilingual Latinx Students. Spanish language studies anchored in authentic Spanish language Latinx children's literature will be shared. Participants will develop creative responses to culturally and linguistically sustaining literature and poetry, leaving with practical examples to nurture their bilingual teacher reading and writing identity and their pedagogy.

This session introduces participants to planning a lectura en comunidad and language analysis with Latinx children’s literature in Spanish. Participants will explore how children’s book authors weave content and craft the complexities of Latinx communities, while also informing our understanding of Spanish language varieties. Participants will workshop plans and artifacts to implement in their schools, including reading in community plans and language study charts using Spanish language mentor texts.
